UFOs - UNIDENTIFIED FLIYING OBJECTS, UAP - UNIDENTIFIED ANOMALOUS PHENOMENA
Introduction: Defining the Mystery
The term UFO (Unidentified Flying Object) was first popularized by the U.S. Air Force in the 1950s as a neutral replacement for “flying saucer.” Today, the U.S. military prefers “UAP” (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena). But whatever vocabulary we use, the subject speaks to a profound mystery in human experience: witnesses across all cultures, times, and professions report seeing aerial craft that defy conventional explanation.
From ancient myths of “chariots of fire” to the modern radar‑visual encounters of fighter pilots, UFOs represent one of the most enduring anomalies in history. This page explores what UFOs are, how they have been observed, what patterns emerge, and why they matter.
What is a UFO?
By definition, a UFO is not automatically assumed to be extraterrestrial. It is any aerial object that remains unexplained after investigation. The phenomenon encompasses a wide range of appearances and behaviors:
- Shapes: discs, cigars, spheres, triangles, Tic‑Tacs, luminous orbs.
- Flight Characteristics: silent hovering, instantaneous acceleration, right‑angle turns, transmedium travel (air → water → space), cloaking.
- Interactions: disturbing animals, affecting vehicles, disabling electronics, in some cases interacting with human consciousness.
When official investigations end with “insufficient information,” the term UFO marks the threshold of mystery.
Unidentified flying objects (UFOs) have been the subject of great interest and debate over the years. While most sightings of UFOs have a natural explanation, a small fraction remains unexplained, fueling speculation and interest in the topic.
Many scientists and skeptic organizations, such as the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, have provided reasonable and prosaic explanations for a significant number of claimed UFO sightings. These explanations include natural phenomena such as meteorological events, optical illusions, and atmospheric effects, human-made technology such as drones or experimental aircraft, delusions, and hoaxes. However, despite these explanations, some ufologists continue to support unconventional, pseudoscientific theories, often claiming that UFOs are evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence.
The beliefs surrounding UFOs have even inspired parts of new religions. One example is the Aetherius Society, founded in the mid-1950s by George King, who claimed to have received messages from extraterrestrial beings through psychic means. The society's beliefs revolve around the idea that UFOs are piloted by highly advanced beings who are here to guide humanity towards spiritual enlightenment.
While unusual sightings in the sky have been reported throughout history, the modern era of UFO sightings began after World War II, when reports of strange objects in the sky became more frequent. This was largely due to the technological advancements made during the Space Age, which led to an increase in space exploration and the possibility of encountering extraterrestrial life.
Various governments, organizations, and individuals conducted studies and investigations into UFO reports throughout the 20th century. The most well-known of these were Project Blue Book in the United States, which investigated thousands of reports of UFO sightings between 1952 and 1969, and Project Condign in the United Kingdom, which was a classified study into UFO sightings and their potential threat to national security. However, despite these efforts, the true nature of UFOs remains a mystery, and the debate over their existence and origins continues to this day.
However in the light of recent events I.E. the New York Times 2017 UFO Article, then the U.S. government acknowledging the existence of the ATIP program (Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program) and other programs, the TIC TAC and gimbal and other videos publicly released, new congressional hearings, new whistleblower laws, new out-in-the-open governmental offices to study and report publicly on UFOs/ UAPs, AARO (All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office) a seismic change has occurred. But there is a caveat: we will just have to watch how the government proceeds...

Historical Timeline
Ancient & Pre‑Modern Times
- Biblical Accounts: “Chariots of fire,” Ezekiel’s wheel within a wheel.
- Mesoamerican Codices: Feathered serpents descending from the sky.
- Medieval Chronicles: The 1561 “Nuremberg celestial phenomenon” and other depictions of mysterious aerial battles.
The Dawn of the Modern Era
- Kenneth Arnold (1947): Pilot reports nine “saucer‑like” craft over Washington state. Media coins the term “flying saucer.”
- Roswell Incident (1947): Crash retrieval narrative begins, along with government secrecy.
- 1950s‑60s: The Great UFO waves in the U.S., France, and South America. Civilian organizations like NICAP and APRO gather reports while military studies (Blue Book) downplay the mystery.
Close Encounters & Waves
- 1973 UFO Flap (US): Hundreds of sightings, including the Pascagoula abduction.
- Belgian Wave (1989‑1990): Dozens of large triangular craft seen by citizens, police, and tracked on radar.
- Phoenix Lights (1997): Enormous V‑shaped formation seen by thousands across Arizona.
- 21st Century / Navy Encounters (2004‑2015): “Tic‑Tac” craft tracked from USS Nimitz, USS Roosevelt—objects with no engines outmaneuvering jets and violating known physics.
The concept of UFOs (Unidentified Flying Objects) has become a part of our modern lexicon, and it is now widely recognized across the globe. The term UFO refers to any object or light seen in the sky or on land that cannot be identified. The term is often used to refer to extraterrestrial spacecraft, but in reality, over 90% of all reported UFOs are later identified as IFOs (Identified Flying Objects), which can range from aircraft landing lights to planets and other astronomical or meteorological phenomena.
J. Allen Hynek, a late astronomer who served as the Air Force's astronomy consultant to Project Blue Book and its predecessors for more than 20 years, provided the most scientifically accepted definition of a UFO. He is also the originator of the first UFO Encounter classification system. According to Hynek, a UFO is "the reported perception of an object or light seen in the sky or upon the land the appearance, trajectory, and general dynamic and luminescent behavior of which do not suggest a logical, conventional explanation and which is not only mystifying to the original percipients but remains unidentified after close scrutiny of all available evidence by persons who are technically capable of making a common sense identification, if one is possible."
The UFO phenomenon has been puzzling people for more than half a century, and it has been reported from virtually every country in the world. Even physicists and astronomers have reported sightings of UFOs. While many skeptics dismiss the existence of UFOs, a several-decades-old Gallup Poll estimated that more than ten million American adults alone have seen what they believed to be a UFO. The reality of UFOs is a topic of debate, but it is undoubtedly one of the most widely reported unexplained mysteries of this or any other century.
Evidence suggests that sightings of UFOs date back much further than the modern era, with the collected books of Charles Fort (1874-1932), sometimes considered the father of ufology, containing accounts of similar apparitions and manifestations. One such account, from the log of Capt. F. W. Banner aboard the bark Lady of the Lake, dated March 22nd, 1870, described a remarkable object or "cloud" that sailors reported seeing. The object was circular in shape, with an included semicircle divided into four parts, and was a light gray color. It moved from a point about 20 degrees above the horizon to a point about 80 degrees above, traveling against the wind for half an hour before disappearing in the evening darkness. This sighting, more than a century old, replicates many of the characteristics common to modern UFO sightings, including circular shape, metallic color, and the ability to travel against the wind.
Types of UFOs
1. Discs & Saucers: Classic 1950s image; frequently reported post‑WWII.
2. Triangles: Black triangular craft with lights at the corners, often silent.
3. Spheres & Orbs: Small, maneuverable, sometimes luminous; often interact with aircraft.
4. Cigar‑Shaped Craft: Long, metallic forms, noted in pre‑modern and Cold War sightings.
5. Tic‑Tacs: Featureless, white, oblong craft—modern Navy videos confirm radar‑tracked encounters.
Observed Behaviors of UFOs
- Instantaneous Acceleration: From hover to thousands of miles per hour with no gradual build‑up.
- Gravity Defiance: No wings, exhaust, or sonic booms.
- Silent Presence: Even at low altitude, many craft emit no audible sound.
- Electromagnetic Effects: Engine failure, radio disruption, magnetic anomalies.
- Transmedium Travel: Submerging in oceans or exiting atmosphere seamlessly.
- Formation Flying: Multiple craft maneuver together as though networked.
Possible Explanations
- Conventional Misidentifications: Weather balloons, planets, drones, or aircraft (explains some, not all).
- Black Budget Technology: Classified human craft (stealth and hypersonic experiments).
- Natural Phenomena: Ball lightning, plasma formations, atmospheric lensing.
- Extraterrestrial Hypothesis (ETH): Visitors from other star systems.
- Interdimensional Hypothesis (IDH): Beings crossing from parallel realities into ours.
- Consciousness Link: Entities or craft interacting with human perception itself.
Global Impact
- Psychological: UFOs challenge trust in governments, science, and our worldview.
- Cultural: They inspire countless films, novels, and art that shape how we imagine “aliens.”
- Scientific: Forced consideration of new propulsion systems, physics beyond relativity.
- Political & Military: UFOs regularly violate restricted U.S., Russian, and other sovereign airspaces—treated as a matter of national security.
Why UFOs Matter
UFOs are not just about aerial oddities. They force humanity to consider:
- Are we being observed by a superior intelligence?
- Is our understanding of science incomplete?
- How should governments disclose information without destabilizing society?
- Could interacting with these intelligences alter our future technology, spirituality, or survival as a species?

Closing Thoughts
Whether through the eyes of ancient prophets, Cold War airmen, or 21st‑century fighter pilots, UFOs represent a consistent, global enigma. The enduring question is not only what they are but why they are here. Until we know, UFOs will remain the single greatest unsolved mystery of our skies.
“I can assure you that UFOs, given that they exist, are not constructed by any power on Earth.”
— President Harry S. Truman
